Schlaraffia

THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SOCIETY

OUR MOTTO IS:

SPEAK GERMAN

APPRECIATE THE ARTS

EXHIBIT A SENSE OF HUMOR

VALUE FRIENDSHIP

Schlaraffia was born about 150 years ago as a discussion round table by German performing artists.

Over the years it evolved into a social society with about 11,000 members worldwide meeting regularly to have a fun evening with friends.

It is not necessary to be fluent in German. With just some German language background and the desire to learn more, you are very welcome to participate.

Members come from many parts of the world and have widely diversified professional and cultural backgrounds.

THE NEW YORK TIMES writes about Schlaraffia:

“Members are often devoted to cultural discussions in German with members reciting poems they have written, or performing their own works on musical instruments. Any mention of religion, politics, or business is forbidden. Humor, friendship and an appreciation of the arts - not necessarily Germanic - are stressed”.

Schlaraffia has no goals, it is not a lodge or fraternity, pursuing whatever agenda. It is an idealistic society based on friendship, tolerance and the preservation of the German language.
